Superfood Spices: DIY Amla and Turmeric Capsules
We all know the importance of staying healthy especially while traveling in places where it can be difficult to control your diet and where you are constantly subjected to all types of foreign bacteria, different sleeping patterns, drastic changes in temperature, etc. To ensure we are boosting our immune systems we load up on superfood spices on a daily basis.
Spices are powerhouses of nutrition. They are packed full of antioxidants, contain powerful medicinal compounds, and are easy to pack which means that they are perfect to take with you on your travels. Two of the healthiest spices that we try to consume every day and that we always pack when we go traveling are amla and turmeric.
Otherwise known as powdered Indian gooseberry, amla is considered to be one of the the most important foods in Ayurvedic medicine. Dr. Greger of nutritionfacts.org has also regarded amla as “the healthiest snack on the planet.” Some of the amazing benefits of amla powder are:

Turmeric can be bought either as a fresh root similar to ginger or in powdered spice form. It can be consumed in many different ways such as golden milk, a shot, in food, or as we like to do when we are home, fresh turmeric in a green smoothie! Turmeric is renowned for its many health promoting qualities:

- Protects cells from DNA damage by free radicals
- Reduce symptoms from arthritis
- Can help with Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD)

One of the problems with consuming spices while traveling is that you don’t always have access to a kitchen where you can prepare them and since amla powder has somewhat of an overwhelming taste it’s necessary (trust us!) to mask it with something. Therefore, we came up with the idea to take amla and turmeric in capsule form. These DIY capsules are easy to prepare and make it more convenient to bring with you on the road.
To prepare our antioxidant packed capsules we pour amla and turmeric powder into two separate bowls (we always make separate capsules and we don’t mix the two spices together). Make sure to add some ground black pepper to the bowl with turmeric to increase the bioavailability. Next, we scoop some of the spice in the bottom part of the capsule and cover it with the top part. It’s really that simple. Vegan capsules are easy to find as well, we found ours all the way in Bali! Take one of each capsule a day to boost your immune system. Remember to take them with a meal since the fat in the food helps your body absorb the spices. These capsules are a great way to ensure you are always getting these superfood spices into your system no matter where you are.
