Vegan Gelato in Rome

Best Vegan Gelato Rome

When it comes to eating gelato, Italy is different from the rest of the world. We’ve talked about the fact that the best Italian food is always seasonal, and that Italians tend to eat according to the season, which is true. However, there is one exception to that rule, and that’s gelato.

While in most countries, gelato - or ice cream - is something reserved for sunny days in the summer, Italians eat gelato all year round. And yes, that includes in the dead of winter. This means that there is always a gelateria around and people are usually up for grabbing a gelato at any given time.

Naturally, this has given us plenty of opportunities to try all of the best vegan gelato in Rome.

Another thing that makes eating vegan gelato in Rome different from elsewhere in the world is how accessible it is. Most, if not all, gelato shops in Rome serve at least a handful of sorbets that are vegan.

In addition, many of the ice cream shops also make a cioccolato fondente, a dark chocolate gelato, which is usually vegan and amazing, of course.

Although, as much as we enjoy any type of vegan gelato, we prefer eating more exciting flavors than fruit. And since there is no shortage of gelaterias serving a range of vegan flavors it made it quite difficult to determine which one was the best.

Our 3 Requirements For Gelato in Rome

We have three requirements that we looked for when trying gelato:

  1. Selection - There has to be plenty of vegan flavors, and we prefer gelato shops serving more than just sorbets.
  2. Location - An easy to reach and practical location.
  3. Flavor - Let's be honest, none of the above really matters unless the taste is incredible.

Now, there are a few gelaterias in Rome that live up to the above requirements but we know you came here for the best, so let us get straight to the point.

Gelarmony Arte Del Gelato Siciliano - The Best Vegan Gelato in Rome

chocolate and hazelnut vegan gelato

After trying as much gelato as we possibly could for months, it wasn't hard to decide who was the winner. In fact, when Victoria’s aunt brought us to Gelarmony the first time, it all made sense.

Gelarmony is a Sicilian artisan gelato shop located in the area of Prati, roughly a 5-minute walk from Piazza del Popolo and a 10-minute walk from Piazza Navona, and they serve the best vegan gelato in Rome. There is no question about it.

So just how good is the vegan gelato at Gelarmony? To put it in simple terms, we buy 1 kilo of vegan hazelnut gelato a week. That's a €23 a week habit that we don't have the willpower to break.

In fact, we spend so much time at Gelarmony that they know what we want when we step in the door, and we swear the guy serving the gelato knows us better than our own family by now.

This gelateria is immensely popular, and there is often a line to order. However, Gelarmony is not all-vegan and the front room of the shop is dedicated to non-vegan gelato and other desserts.

That being said, Gelarmony also offers something no other shop does. They have a separate room dedicated to vegan gelato, aka heaven on earth.

The vegan gelato at Gelarmony is perfectly creamy, made from quality ingredients, spot on in flavor, and served at a perfect temperature. We promise you every mouthful is more than worth the calories. You will also never be able to go back to eating regular ice cream again.

12+ Vegan Gelato Flavors at Gelarmony

The vegan gelato at Gelarmony comes in a range of flavors. In addition to the regular sorbets, they serve pistachio, caramel, chocolate, cinnamon, soy milk, coffee, vanilla, coconut, walnut, almond, and our personal favorite, hazelnut.

The gelato can either be served in a cup or in a vegan cone, and you have the option of topping it with panna - vegan whipped cream. There is even vegan chocolate whipped cream! We also suggest that you get yourself a container to bring with you for later with a few mini vegan cones. Trust us, you won’t regret it.

Moreover, Gelarmony also serves some other vegan products such as brioche and even vegan wine, so make sure you stock up on everything you need for your vegan trip in Rome.

While you're at it, make sure to visit the all-vegan restaurant Flower Burger around the corner. And if you want to taste the best vegan parmesan in the world, head over to iVegan, a vegan grocery store located in the area.

  • What to order: We would recommend you follow your gut feeling, although we rarely get anything besides the hazelnut. And don't forget to top it off with whipped cream!
  • Gelarmony Address: Via Marcantonio Colonna, 34, 00192 Roma (plus two smaller locations)

More of the Best Gelato in Rome

As mentioned, gelaterias are not a scarcity in Rome, and there is a vast selection of shops that serve amazing gelato for vegans and non-vegans alike. In addition to Gelarmony, there are three gelaterias that we think deserve a mentioning due to the vegan gelato they offer.

Iamotti Gelateria

Iamotti Gelato Rome Sign

Iamotti is a close runner-up to Gelarmony when it comes to serving amazingly creamy and decadent vegan gelato in Rome.

This gelato shop is also located in Prati only a ten-minute walk from the Vatican, and it can easily be reached from most of Rome by metro. Iamotti is also really close to the all-vegan restaurant MaVa? in case you want to finish off an amazing dinner with some gelato.

Compared to the other gelato shops in Rome, Iamotti feels a bit more upscale with a modern design, a large chandelier, and a wall of chocolate! Also, the gelato is artisanal, and the quality is very high.

The hazelnut was incredibly creamy and full of flavor, the almond was one of the best we’ve ever had, and the dark chocolate was perfectly rich. The only downside is that they don’t have as many options as Gelarmony so you will be a bit more limited in choice. With that said, Iamotti still has a great selection of vegan gelato flavors including nut ice creams, sorbets, and chocolate. The cones served are also vegan and the gelato comes with a vegan wafer!

As you can imagine, we were super excited to find this place and knew right away that Iamotti deserved a spot on our list of the best vegan gelato in Rome. Don’t believe us? Then check it out for yourself!

  • What to order: Obviously we love hazelnut, but the almond gelato blew us away as well!
  • Iamotti Address: Via Trionfale, 122, 00195 Roma

Grezzo Raw Chocolate

Vegan Gelato Rome

Grezzo is a raw and all-vegan dessert shop in Rome that serves vegan gelato made from the highest quality ingredients. Their flavors range from fruits to different types of chocolate, hazelnut, pistachio and more. They also serve a range of other vegan desserts and cakes.

In our opinion, Grezzo is the perfect place to swing by for a sweet and a coffee. We like Grezzo so much that we even listed it in our vegan restaurant guide to Rome, together with Gelarmony, of course!

Being the fact that Grezzo is located in the city center just a stone’s throw from the Colosseum makes this vegan gelato shop highly accessible from most areas of Rome.

Grezzo also makes cakes to order and caters sweets for parties, weddings, etc. and will set you up for any type of celebration.

  • What to order: Anything made from raw chocolate will likely blow your mind.
  • Grezzo Address: Via Urbana, 130, 00184 Roma

Grom - Best Sorbet in Rome

Founded in Turin in 2003, Grom is a multinational ice cream shop with locations in places like New York, Paris, and Dubai. It’s one of the most popular ice cream shops in Italy, and they have several locations in Rome.

Grom's slogan, il gelato come una volta which translates to gelato the way it used to be, is a testament to their dedication.

We usually go to their location around the corner from the Pantheon, but with a quick Google search, you’ll soon know which Grom gelateria is closest to you.

As mentioned earlier, a lot of gelaterias in Rome cater to vegans by offering sorbets, and that’s exactly what Grom does. But the sorbets served at Grom are more much more than your average sorbet. Grom’s sorbets are so fresh that you can taste the actual fruit in the gelato with the perfect mix of sweet and sour. They pride themselves on quality and do not uses any flavorings, colors, preservatives, or emulsifiers.

Needless to say, Grom is a must-visit for anyone that loves sorbets and lighter flavors.

Today, Grom is such a well-established brand that they even sell their ice cream in packages at most grocery stores in Rome, meaning you can always pick up a pint and bring it home.
